Public Works Department
Capital Improvement Project List - 2010
ENGINEERING
Responsible for the design, bid and construction of various public projects within the City, this division includes the City Engineering Manager, four Associate/Assistant Civil Engineers, a Public Works Inspector, and an Engineering Technician.
Engineering is charged with the task of safeguarding life, health, property and public welfare through regulations regarding control of the design, construction, quality of materials, use, and occupancy of various projects. This is done primarily through project site inspections. The location of all private and public facilities, and the improvement of the basic city infrastructure to enhance air and water quality in the basin are also primary responsibilities.
Within the charge to safeguard life falls this division’s responsibility for traffic engineering. In addition to surveying and designing new streets, engineering staff regulates street operations by completing traffic counts, accident analyses, speed surveys, and other studies to determine where traffic signals, street markings, regulatory signs and other control measures should be placed. The Engineering division also determines safe speeds on city streets to ensure public safety while maintaining free-flowing traffic.
Designing and supervising the construction of street improvements and erosion control projects, in addition to the above-listed duties, takes a great deal of time. However, this division staff also finds time to pursue additional grant funding for more erosion control and other council-approved projects.
