The City of South Lake Tahoe is a general law city governed by a five-member City Council. Members of the City Council, City Clerk, and the City Treasurer are elected at large for a four-year term. A municipal election is held on the first Tuesday in November in even-numbered years. Each December, the Council meets and chooses one of its members as Mayor and one as Mayor Pro Tem. The Mayor is the presiding officer of the Council.

The City Clerk serves as the election officer and is responsible for issuance and acceptance of nomination papers, city measures and the publication of necessary legal notices. In addition, all campaign disclosure statements and statements of economic interest filings required by the Fair Political Practices Commission are centralized in the City Clerk's Office.

November 2, 2010

          The City of South Lake Tahoe, in consolidation with El Dorado County Elections Department, will be conducting an election on November 2, 2010 for the following elected positions:

Three (3) City Councilmembers
One (1) City Clerk
One (1) City Treasurer

            The filling period opens on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.; however, if an incumbent fails to file nomination papers by August 6, 2010, the filing period will be extended for 5 days, closing on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

            All interested persons must be a registered voter of the City of South Lake Tahoe at the time nomination papers are issued.

            The City of South Lake Tahoe does not have a filing fee.  However, there is a charge for candidates who wish to file and print a Candidate Statement of Qualifications in the sample ballot (optional).  The fee determined by the El Dorado County Registrar of Voters for printing in English is $335, for Spanish $431, for both English and Spanish $760.

            All official forms of Declaration of Candidacy for the City Councilmembers and City Treasurer can be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office located at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe, California, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  All official forms of Declaration of Candidacy for City Clerk can be obtained from the El Dorado Recorder-Clerk’s Office, South Lake Tahoe Branch, located at 3368 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, Suite 08, South Lake Tahoe, California, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

            The last day to register to vote for the November 2, 2010 election is Monday, October 18, 2010.
